How a Custom 3D Figurine from One Photo Is Made: Step-by-Step

From one photo to a figurine you can hold
You send us a photo. A few weeks later, a figurine that looks like the person (or pet, or couple) in that photo arrives at your door. But what actually happens in between?
At PrinYou, every custom 3D figurine from photo goes through five stages. Here is the whole process, start to finish — no mystery, no marketing fluff.
Step 1: Photo review
Everything starts with your photo. When your order comes in, our team reviews the image before anything is produced:
- Face visibility. A clear, front-facing view works best. Hats, sunglasses, and heavy shadows make the likeness harder to capture.
- Lighting. Even, natural light gives us the most detail to work with.
- Resolution. You do not need a professional camera — a modern phone photo is usually plenty.
If your photo has issues, we will tell you before production starts and suggest alternatives. That is far better than shipping a figurine that does not look like your person.
Step 2: Digital sculpting
A modeling artist builds a digital version of your figurine, matching the pose, proportions, outfit, and facial features from your photo. For couple and family figurines, two or more people are composed together in one scene.
You get to see this digital version before anything physical is made. If the pose or expression needs adjusting, this is the moment — changes are quick at this stage and expensive later.
Step 3: Printing and finishing
Once the digital sculpt is approved, the figurine is produced in the finish you selected at checkout. PrinYou offers two distinct finishing styles, and the product page for each item shows exactly which one applies:
- Full-color direct print — captures photo-accurate colors and fine detail across the whole surface.
- Monochrome print with hand painting — a sculptural base finish with hand-applied color, giving each piece a slightly one-of-a-kind character.
Both are made to order. Neither is "better" — they look different, and the right choice depends on the piece and your taste.
Step 4: Quality check and packaging
Every figurine is inspected before it leaves us: color accuracy, surface finish, structural stability, and base fit. Pieces that do not pass are remade, not shipped.
Approved figurines are packed in protective wrap inside a gift box, so the unboxing feels like an occasion — because it usually is one.
Step 5: Shipping to your door
We ship worldwide. Current delivery estimates and shipping options are shown at checkout and on our shipping page, since they vary by destination. Tracking is provided for every order.
Frequently asked questions
How many photos do I need?
One clear photo is enough to start. Extra angles help for outfit details or side profiles, but they are not required.
Can I use an old or low-quality photo?
Usually yes. Send it over and we will review it — if the quality is a concern, we will tell you honestly and suggest the best crop or enhancement before production.
Can I change something after ordering?
Small changes are possible before the digital sculpt is approved. After approval, the figurine enters production and changes are no longer possible — another reason we show you the digital version first.
How long does the whole process take?
Each figurine is made to order rather than pulled from stock, so there is a production window. The current lead time is always shown on the product page at checkout.
