Creative Uses for Custom 3D Photo Pins and Relief Badges

Pins are the smallest thing we make and the most social. A relief badge is a 3D printed piece, usually a few centimeters across, with a raised image built from a photo — a face, a pet, an inside joke. They spread. One person wears the pin to brunch, three people ask where it came from.

Most people order them for weddings and stop there. There are more uses than that, and because the minimum order is one, testing an idea costs almost nothing.

Where pins earn their keep

Weddings, reunions and events

Groomsmen pins with the couple's faces. Reunion badges with the year and the school colors. Name tags that double as souvenirs. At a wedding, a relief pin beats the classic boutonniere card because it survives the day — guests pin it to a bag or a jacket and keep it.

Teams, clubs and classrooms

A team pin with the mascot's face and the season. A classroom badge with each student's mini portrait — teachers use them for "star of the week" boards. Order small numbers first, then reorder the winners. The minimum is one, so a five-pin test order is normal.

Personal everyday carry

Pin a small portrait of the dog to a work bag. A tiny couple face on a lapel. These are the quiet version of the gift — the recipient discovers it every morning on the way out the door.

What works at pin scale

Simple shapes read better

At 2–4 cm, fine details simplify. A single face with a clear expression beats a busy group scene. High-contrast photos — dark hair against a light background — produce the crispest raised image.

Full-color direct print for faces

Faces and pets print in full color, directly onto the piece. That is what makes a photo pin recognizable at arm's length. Our hand-painted line — single-color print with hand finishing — is used for different products and is not how photo pins are produced, so expect color, not paint.

Pick the right backing

Standard pin backs work on lapels, bags and hats. Rubber backs hold better on active wear like team jerseys. Tell us where the pin will live and we will suggest the backing at the preview stage.

Ordering pins in small numbers

There is no bulk requirement. Most first orders are between one and ten pins. Because production starts only after you approve the preview, a small order carries the same process guarantees as a large one: preview in 3–5 working days, then 7–10 working days of production after approval.

Caring for relief pins

The surface is matte with a fine sandstone-like texture. Wipe with a dry cloth; avoid soaking or solvents. Keep them out of the washing machine and away from prolonged direct sun, which can soften any printed color over time.

Frequently asked questions

What size are the pins?

Most pins land in the 2–4 cm range — small enough for a lapel, large enough for a face to read. Larger sizes are possible for display pieces; we confirm dimensions on the preview.

Can I order pins for a whole wedding party at once?

Yes. Send the photos for each person plus the wording, and the previews will show each design. There is no minimum, so parties of five or parties of fifty follow the same process.

Do pins survive daily use?

They hold up well on bags and jackets with normal handling. They are decorative pieces, not industrial hardware — treat them like a nice pin, not a carabiner.

Can I reorder the same design later?

Yes. Approved designs can be reordered in any quantity, including one, so wedding favors or team pins can be topped up after the event.
