Comment placer une figurine 3D personnalisée sur un gâteau
Partager
Placing a custom 3D figurine on a cake is a five-minute job, but the order of operations matters — do it wrong and you either crack the topper or end up with a piece that was never food-safe. Here is the process we recommend, based on how these pieces are made and what they can handle.
First, the honest framing: a custom cake topper is a display piece, not a food item. It is a 3D-printed decorative keepsake with a matte, sandstone-like surface. It should never touch the cut surface of the cake, and it comes off before you slice.
What you need before you start
A finished, cooled cake
Place the topper on a fully cooled, finished cake — buttercream or fondant, chilled and firm. A soft or warm cake will not hold the topper's weight, and a freshly frosted cake will show every touch.
A clean, dry base
Wipe the figurine's base with a dry cloth before it goes near the cake. Most placement accidents start with a damp or sticky base.
The right support method
Pick your method before the cake is in front of guests, not during.
Three ways to position the figurine on a cake
1. Toothpick or dowel into the cake
Insert a clean toothpick or short dowel about 2–3 cm into the cake surface where the figurine will stand, then set the base onto it. The pick carries some of the weight and stops the piece from sinking or sliding. Keep the pick away from where you will cut.
2. On the cake board, beside the cake
The safest option: place the figurine on the cake board next to the cake rather than on it. No contact with frosting, no picking, no risk. We recommend this most often, because the topper survives the party intact and the cake stays clean.
3. On a small stand or riser
A short acrylic stand or riser behind the cake gives the figurine height without any contact with the cake. If the topper is a larger piece — 12 cm or above — this is usually the most stable setup.
The placement sequence
Do it in this order: finish and chill the cake, position the topper support, set the figurine, then check it from the guest side — the topper reads better slightly off-center or toward the back, not dead middle. Keep it away from candles, warm rooms and direct sun during the party; the matte surface handles room temperature fine, but this is a decorative piece, not a serving prop.
Removing it before cutting
Take the topper off before you cut the cake, every time. Lift it straight up rather than dragging it through frosting, and remove any toothpick as well. Once the figurine is off the cake, wipe the base dry and it is back to being a shelf keepsake. This is also why the topper should not be buried into the cake: it is not food-contact, and a piece that has been in frosting needs cleaning before display.

Frequently asked questions
Can a custom 3D figurine go directly on a cake?
It can sit on a finished, cooled cake, but it is a display piece, not a food item — it comes off before cutting. The safest placement is on the cake board beside the cake or on a small stand, with no frosting contact.
How do I keep the figurine from sliding?
A clean toothpick or short dowel under the base gives it grip, or place it on the cake board next to the cake. Chilled, firm frosting holds better than soft or warm frosting.
Do I need to remove the topper before cutting the cake?
Yes, always. Lift it straight up, remove any toothpick, and wipe the base dry. The topper is decorative and not food-contact, so it should not be on the cake during serving.
What size topper works on a standard cake?
Smaller toppers around 8–10 cm suit most tiered cakes and single-tier celebrations; larger pieces read better on a stand beside the cake. Size guidance is on the custom cake topper page.
